Origins of the FAF and its founder

On the basis of his experience of travelling around the world, visiting stables and seeing highly valuable horses as well as diverse farriery techniques, Bernard reached the conclusion that his expertise so far has mainly benefited farriers fortunate enough to employed by wealthy horse owners. He sees many horses suffering from inadequate hoof care and inappropriate shoeing.  Many ordinary farriers have no access to the professional training and work supervision available to those employed by the big stable owners. The techniques of farriery are often ignored by the training institutions and have no support from political decision-makers who may consider it to be an obsolete profession.  As a consequence of this, the development of know-how for the farriers can be in a state of neglect.

With the benefit of his long experience as an advisor and as a teacher, Bernard Duvernay decided to come to the help of needy horses and farriers . With the creation of the Flying Anvil Foundation, the intention is to put in place small-scale training structures for farriers in countries where these are non- existent and where a need is felt for them.

Once the training sessions have been set up, local organisations can swiftly take over the management of the courses. The FAF will provide ongoing support after the training structure has been put in place, supplying course materials and additional information.  The FAF will be constantly available to help trainers with continuing professional development.

The FAF is a non-profit making Foundation and its aims are recognized for being of public benefits. It is governed according to the rules of the Swiss Federal Government’s general secretariat.
